Supporting the Mental Health of Young People in Schools, Colleges and Education Settings

We're reaching out to schools and colleges across Greater Manchester to share how our bespoke mental health support can help students thrive academically and emotionally.

We know educators are doing incredible work supporting their students every day, and it's not always easy with the increasing challenges and pressures young people and schools face. That's why we're actively connecting with schools and colleges to share how our high-quality, evidence-based mental health support can make a real difference.

Three Decades of Educational Partnership

For over 30 years, 42nd Street has been providing a range of one-to-one confidential sessions and group sessions with young people who are experiencing emotional wellbeing and mental health challenges, alongside support and professional development for education colleagues as part of a whole school college approach.

Throughout our experience working with schools and colleges across Greater Manchester, we know that mental health and emotional wellbeing are inextricably linked to young people's ability to achieve and thrive throughout their academic journey. We've also found that every cohort of students and the challenges faced by leadership teams is unique

A Whole School Approach

With growing understanding around the needs of young people experiencing vulnerabilities and the nuanced impact of trauma, we're aware that finding the best way to support students to reach their full potential can be a complex task for schools and colleges.

We've developed an entirely bespoke approach to mental health support that recognises this complexity. We work alongside young people in partnership with our education colleagues, to empower and explore how young people can better understand themselves and others, recognise the barriers they need to overcome and develop the skills and tools they need to thrive.

Our Comprehensive Offer:

Our schools, colleges and education portfolio includes:

  • One-to-one support: Evidence-based therapeutic approaches, available in school or online.
  • Creative group programmes: Tackling anxiety, low mood, self-esteem and isolation through nationally recognised creative approaches.
  • Identity-focused groups: Providing young people with a voice and increased sense of belonging
and expertise in supporting marginalised communities and the most vulnerable young people, including LGBTQ+, Global Majority, Neurodiverse, Young Carer, Care Experienced and Disabled communities.
  • Staff development: Practical support for wider staff teams to develop strategies in response to complex mental health presentations. As well as training, staff wellbeing sessions and supervision.
  • Step-In programme: A proven alternative to managed moves for the most difficult to engage cohorts, including school-refusers.
  • Quality assured delivery: With nationally recognised outcomes and measurable impact.

The Power Of Group Work

Offering groups to young people can provide an increased sense of belonging and is an opportunity for students to meet others, to make new friends and tackle the highest presenting mental health issues of isolation, low mood, low confidence and anxiety. We are now recognised nationally as leaders in the impact of creativity and group support on young people's mental health.

We understand that young people face a number of challenges in their day to day lives including family, relationships, pressure to achieve, bullying, discrimination, low self-esteem and loss. Our practitioners have a wide variety of experience and skills, all of which underpin the psychosocial support needed for young people with complex intersectional experiences that require a trauma-responsive approach.

Measuring Real Impact

Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative tools, we measure improvements in student wellbeing, emotional health, autonomy, expression, and their relationships with adults and the wider impact on attendance, behaviour, and engagement—and we are proud of the long-term impact we've seen.

We understand that one solution doesn't fit all and we take the time to understand each education setting, community and needs so we can tailor our support accordingly and ensure schools and their staff get the support they truly need when they need it.
